Choirs

The choirs that I lead sing a large and ever-growing repertoire of unaccompanied harmony songs, drawn from a variety of traditions across the centuries and around the world.

Our repertoire includes American Shape-Note and gospel music;
medieval and renaissance songs from Britain and Europe; English folk songs, carols and West Gallery music; Georgian and Corsican polyphony; and African songs and dance-songs. I often arrange songs for choirs, and occasionally write them; we've also learned and performed songs written by other choir members.

The choirs are non-competitive; we sing good music for the sheer love of it, while aiming to reach our best possible standard in performance.

I teach all songs by ear, in an informal but focused atmosphere; there's no need to read music (although I do occasionally provide written music, if appropriate, for some songs - for those people who find it helpful).
